NTT is set to expand its data center footprint in Johor, Malaysia.
NTT Data this week announced its proposed acquisition of a 68.5-acre parcel of land in Gelang Patah, Johor Bahru, for a data center campus.
The company aims to develop six buildings totaling 290MW of capacity at the site. The first 48MW building is due to launch in April 2027.
"With the APAC region emerging as one of the fastest growing and most influential markets for IT and data centers, our strategic land acquisition and development in Malaysia underscores our commitment to further expansion in the region,” said Doug Adams, CEO and president, Global Data Centers, NTT Data. “Johor Bahru is an increasingly important cross-border economic zone due to its proximity to Singapore.”
NTT acquired 68.5 acres in Johor from local real estate firm Tropicana in August for RM383 million ($88.5m). Plans for the site weren't shared at the time.
Yasuo Suzuki, EVP, managing director of Japan and APAC's global data centers, NTT Data, added: "Expanding in Gelang Patah enhances our digital infrastructure in Malaysia, drives APAC economic growth, strengthens regional ties, creates jobs, and fosters technological innovation.”
NTT said it operates six facilities in Cyberjaya, near Kuala Lumpur, with a total IT load capacity of 20MW.
The company launched CBJ6 last year. The facility offers 7MW across 4,890 sqm (52,635 sq ft) and densities of up to 15kW per rack. NTT expanded the 2.7MW Cyberjaya 4 in 2018 and began work on Cyberjaya 5 in 2019.
CBJ3, listed in a brochure, offers 516 racks. No longer listed, CBJ1 previously offered 335 racks.
Located in Malaysia’s south, Johor is just across the border from Singapore. Though Singapore is starting to ease restrictions around its ongoing moratorium on new data center developments, Johor has grown a sizeable data center market of its own as developments overspill from the city-state.
Other developers and operators in Johor include PDG, AirTrunk, Equinix, Keppel, ChinData's Bridge DC, and Yondr.
