US operator Skybox Datacenters and real estate firm Prologis are developing a massive data center campus in Austin, Texas.
First reported by Data Center Frontier (DCF), Skybox has announced plans for PowerCampus Austin; a 600MW campus across 160 acres in the Hutto area of northeast Austin.
The campus could reportedly hold up to four million sq ft (371,600 sqm) of data center space in partnership with logistics real estate giant Prologis. The site would include two 300MW private substations.
Skybox said flexible build-to-suit options are available within 12-24 months, with data centers zoned by right in the area. According to DCF, the campus is scheduled to begin delivering capacity in 2024.
Skybox and Prologis plan to build six to eight buildings, offering data centers sized at 24, 48, or 72MW. The 72MW design calls for a three-story, 700,000 sq ft (65,000 sqm) building; the 48MW design would offer 469,000 sq ft (43,570 sqm) across two stories; and the 24MW design would offer 235,000 sq ft (21,830 sqm) across two stories.
"PowerCampus Austin will be the start of a new era of hyperscale development," Rob Morris, CEO of Skybox Datacenters, told DCF. "This unique asset and location offer unprecedented access to power and a predictable road map for growth. We look forward to doing our part to enable the next generation of critical infrastructure in a thoughtful and sustainable manner.”
"Skybox is excited to partner with Prologis on this new venture and build on our momentum in Central Texas," Morris added.
Prologis and Skybox acquired more than 220 acres from the City of Hutto on the south side of US Highway 79 in far eastern Hutto in August 2022.
"This 150-acre campus will contribute to the local economy and build upon North Austin’s growing reputation as a world-class location for digital infrastructure," said JC Witt, VP investments at Prologis. "We’re delighted to be working with the City of Hutto and Skybox Datacenters on this state-of-the-art data center campus."
On its website, Skybox says it has developments in Chicago, Dallas, Austin, Houston, Northern Virginia, and Santa Clara.
Skybox has partnered with Prologis for a number of data center developments across the US. In Texas, the companies are also developing data centers in Pflugerville in Austin, as well as a 100MW build-to-suit campus in the Plano area of Dallas. The companies also partnered for facilities in Chicago and possibly Virginia.
Last month previous Skybox partner Bandera Ventures acquired a 100-acre site in the Lancaster area of southern Dallas with aims to develop it into a data center campus with Skybox.
Prologis is one of a number of logistics & warehouse industrial real estate firms looking to move into or expand their existing presence in the data center space. The likes of Segro, GLP, ESR, P3, and others are also looking to develop facilities in the US, Europe, and Asia Pacific.
