Skybox Datacenters is planning a 100MW build-to-suit data center campus in Plano, Texas in partnership with logistics real estate firm Prologis.
The site is owned by Prologis and was previously an NTT Data Services data center and office complex.
On its website, Skybox now lists Atlantic Station; a 64-acre, 100MW data center campus in northern Dallas able to house up to one million square feet (92,900 sqm) of data center development. The site includes an on-site substation, with 25MW available now.
Located at 2300 West Plano Parkway, the site was previously used by NTT Data Services. NTT Data acquired the complex in 2016 when it bought the former Perot Systems IT services operation from Dell in a deal valued at more than $3 billion. Dell had acquired the company in 2009 for $3.9 billion.
NTT sold the one-million-square-foot office and tech complex to GI Partners in early 2019. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but NTT Data was due to lease back the property – including two data center buildings – on a ‘long-term basis.’
Parts of the original campus were demolished in 2021, with a Prologis affiliate then purchasing the 64-acre site at the end of 2021. The logistics giant last year gained planning approval for an eight-building warehouse project on the site, but didn't mention new data centers or Skybox.
At the time, a Prologis spokesperson told DCD: "NTT Data Services will continue to operate as a customer of Prologis on-site, through a lease agreement. We are excited about the unique opportunities presented at this location, and we will continue to work with the community in the planning process."
The former NTT data center site was a scene of a shooting incident in 2017. James Frazier, a data center technician who was not an NTT Data employee but did have access to the building, was arrested after shots were fired. He was reportedly carrying an automatic rifle. No one was reported injured.
On its website, Skybox says it has developments in Chicago, Dallas, Austin, Houston, Northern Virginia, and Santa Clara.
The company is also developing data centers in Hutto and Pflugerville in Austin in partnership with Prologis. The companies also partnered for facilities in Chicago and possibly Virginia.
Earlier this week Bandera Ventures acquired a 100-acre site in the Lancaster area of southern Dallas, Texas, with aims to develop it into a data center campus with Skybox.
Logistics & warehouse industrial real estate firms are increasingly looking to move into the data center space. The likes of ESR, Prologis, GLP, Segro, P3, Agility, and others are also looking to develop facilities in the US, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific.
Some are developing in partnership with existing operators - ESR is working with Stack in APAC - and some like GLP are seeking to become operators themselves.
