The expansion would comprise three components on around 7.74 acres at 2407 Ak Street at McClellan: a two-story data center building totaling around 110,000 square feet (10,220 sqm); a two-story administration building, and a one-story generator building totaling around 8,300 square feet (771 sqm).

Prime has confirmed the application to DCD, saying it will be an 18MW facility, with Sacramento Municipal Utility District as a utility provider. It will offer up to 40kW per rack air-colled and 120kW+ per rack with liquid. The company aims to break ground by the end of Q2 2025.

“We are pleased to address strong customer demand with expanded capacity at our Sacramento data center campus in McClellan Park,” said Nicholas Laag, Founder and CEO of Prime Data Centers. “Prime’s second Sacramento data center will be developed with a focus on sustainability as well as providing AI-ready digital infrastructure for today’s hyperscale and enterprise organizations.”

Prime’s McClellan Park facility opened in early 2020, offering 8MW across 65,000 sq ft (6,039 sqm). Plans for a second, 150,000 sq ft (13,935 sqm), 16MW building were first announced back in November 2021.

Prime's current portfolio is largely centered in the US around California, with campuses also in development in Dallas and Austin, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; and Phoenix, Arizona.

The company, which counts Macquarie Captial as an investor, announced plans to move into Europe in 2023 with a three-building, 124MW campus in Saeby, in northern Denmark. A 40MW site is also planned in Madrid, Spain.
