Social media giant Meta has signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with US renewable energy developer Origis Energy to offtake power from a solar plant in Texas.
The 303MWdc Greyhound A Solar project in West Odessa is slated to achieve commercial operations by mid 2026. The exact capacity that Meta will offtake from the project has not been disclosed. DCD has contacted both parties for further information.
"We are thrilled to partner with Origis Energy and bring an additional 240 MWac of solar energy to the local grid. With this collaboration, we are continuing to match 100 percent of our electricity use with clean energy to support our data center operations," said Urvi Parekh, director of Global Energy, Meta.
Origis has already secured offtake agreements for 1GW of solar capacity in the West Texas region. In addition, the company is developing 1GW+ of solar and battery storage as part of a 2GW+ energy complex slated for operations in 2029.
Meta has signed multiple PPAs in Texas to decarbonize its operations. At the end of last year, the company signed 11 PPAs with NextEra Energy for up to 2.5GW of power across the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Southwest Power Pool, and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator markets.
Before this, in November of last year, the company inked a 600MW PPA with Engie North America from Engie’s Swenson Ranch Solar project in Stonewall County, southeast of Lubbock, Texas.
Meta is currently expanding its presence in the Lone Star State. Late last year, the company broke ground on its new 1GW data center in El Paso, Texas, with some $1.5 billion set to be invested in the first phase of development. Previous reports suggest there could be up to five phases of development, each totaling around 800,000 sq ft (74,320 sqm).
The campus will be Meta’s third in Texas. The company has data center campuses in Fort Worth and Temple in the state. It also operates sites nearby in neighboring Los Lunas, New Mexico, and Mesa, Arizona.
