Space data center startup Starcloud has revealed plans to launch Amazon Web Services (AWS) on-prem/Edge offering, AWS Outposts, in space, as well as its long-term goal of an 88,000-satellite constellation.

Co-founder and CEO of Starcloud, Philip Johnston, revealed the partnership with AWS in a LinkedIn post on February 9.

Johnston wrote: "I am excited to share that Starcloud will be the first to launch the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Outpost hardware to space on our second satellite launching in October this year, further enabling high-performance computing in space!"

AWS Outposts are rack and server-level offerings from AWS, enabling customers to bring AWS capabilities to their own data center or Edge location. Launched in 2018, the cloud giant unveiled a new generation in April 2025 that could support AWS' seventh-generation x86-powered Amazon EC2 instances, beginning with the C7i compute-optimized instances, M7i general-purpose instances, and R7i memory-optimized instances.

Details of the AWS Outposts deployment on Starcloud have yet to be provided.

The company has previously worked with Google on its first satellite. It launched a satellite with an Nvidia H100 GPU on board in November 2025, and announced in December that it was running and querying responses from Google's Gemma large language model (LLM).

This satellite was a "test," however, with Starcloud ultimately planning to launch larger data centers in space.

The company is also looking to deploy a large number of satellites, with PCMag reporting that Starcloud had submitted a proposal to the FCC for a constellation of up to 88,000 satellites. Currently, around 14,500 satellites orbit Earth, though hundreds of thousands more are planned in the coming years.

The Starcloud constellation, per the proposal, will be used to "train and operate artificial intelligence models and other cloud computing services."

It adds: "These satellites will utilize the unique advantages of space: near-constant solar power, radiative cooling, and the ability to scale sizes and power levels not possible on Earth. Leveraging these advantages over terrestrial data centers, these satellites will deliver transformative cost and energy efficiency while significantly reducing the negative impacts associated with terrestrial data centers."

Starcloud's application shortly follows SpaceX's proposal to launch one million data center satellites. By far the largest player in the satellite space, SpaceX claims that, once Starship is operational and reusable, "launching one million tonnes per year of satellites generating 100kW of computer power per tonne would add 100 gigawatts of AI compute capacity annually, with minimal ongoing operational or maintenance needs.

Amazon, through Amazon Leo, and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin are also developing low Earth orbit communication satellites, and Bezos has previously affirmed that he believes that data centers will ultimately end up in space, but said that it will happen in the "next couple of decades."

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said that he acquired rocket company Relativity Space to put data centers in orbit, and in November announced 'Project Suncatcher,' a long-term plan to put terawatts of compute in space.

Others looking at the technology include Axiom Space, NTT, Ramon.Space, and Sophia Space, to name but a few.
