Another data center in Russia has been struck by the Ukrainian military, with banking company Sberbank seeing one of its facilities attacked.
As reported by Russian news agency Tass, Sber this week confirmed a drone attack had struck its data center in Balakovo, Saratov Region.
"We confirm the attack on the data center. All Sberbank systems and services are operating normally and without interruption. No employees were harmed," said Sber's first deputy chairman of the management board, Alexander Vedyakhin.
Local social media posts appear to show a damaged data center building, but the company hasn’t outlined the overall impact of the attacks.
Sberbank is a Russian majority state-owned banking and financial services company headquartered in Moscow.
Announced in 2020, Sberbank began construction of the 55,000 sqm (592,000 sq ft) Balakovo facility in 2021. Located close to the Balakovo nuclear power plant and the Saratov hydroelectric power plant, the facility was being built out in phases through to 2030. The site will reportedly total more than 80MW at full build-out.
Sberbank also owns data centers in the Yuzhny port and Skolkovo areas of Moscow. The Skolkovo facility launched in 2017 and offers u pto 30MW of capacity.
Sberbank previously operated a cloud division, SberCloud, though this has since been sold and rebranded to Cloud.ru.
The attack is the latest facility to be struck in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Yandex, one of Russia’s largest technology firms, has seen three of its five facilities hit by Ukrainian strikes in the last week. The company’s Vladimir data center near Moscow was hit over the weekend; its facility in Sasovo was struck on Thursday and its Kaluga facility on Friday.
Some customers previously hosted in impacted Yandex facilities are being transferred to services hosted by Selectel, K2Cloud, and VK Cloud.
In response to the Yandex attacks, the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Digital Development are reportedly discussing joint measures to protect Russian data centers.
Russian forces have attacked numerous data centers across Ukraine. Facilities operated by Parkovyi Data Center, MiroHost, Datagroup, Vodafone Ukraine, De Novo, Cosmonova, Omega Telecom, Ukrsibbank, and Ukrtelecom have been hit in recent weeks.
Outside Kyiv, facilities operated by Tenet in Odesa and the RX-Name data center in the Nikolaev/Mykolaiv area of southern Ukraine have also been hit.
Earlier this year, Ukrainian forces struck a data center in Russian-occupied Ukraine in Prymorsk.
