NTT has broken ground on a project to expand its data center in Vienna, Austria
The expansion will add around 3,000 square meters (32,300 sq ft) to the Vienna 1 facility, taking it to 8,600 sqm (92,500 sq ft). The facility will have 15.2MW of capacity, with the expansion due to complete in the summer of 2022.
“From summer 2022 we will be able to offer our customers 15.2MW of IT capacity. Because the demand for data center services in Austria is growing rapidly, we are already looking for further expansion opportunities,” said Nora Lawender, CEO of NTT Ltd. in Austria.
The federal government has pledged an investment of €4.12 million ($4.8m) into the project. NTT said it will “continuously invest in Austria over the next few years” and continue to expand the location.
“Digitization and digital technologies are decisive for the competitiveness of our country. With the investment bonus, we have therefore particularly supported investments in the digital and sustainable transformation,” said Margarete Schramböck, Federal Minister for Digitization and Business Location. “You can see that this premium is well invested! We are thus securing Austria's position as a top business location and domestic jobs in all regions of Austria. "
NTT acquired the Austrian data center in 2015 when it acquired German firm e-shelter from US equity firm ABRY and Investa Holding, a real estate firm controlled by e-shelter CEO Rupprecht Rittweger. Along with Vienna, NTT took over facilities in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Munich, Germany, as well as a data center in Zurich, Switzerland. NTT retired the e-shelter brand in 2019.
Building B at the Vienna facility opened in November 2019. In August of this year the company broke ground to expand its former e-shelter facility in Switzerland which will add around 4,500 sqm (48,000 sq ft). NTT is also adding a total of 30,000 sqm (323,000 sq ft) to its German campuses in Frankfurt, Berlin, and Bonn.
