Edgnex has announced plans to develop a 12.5MW data center in Athens, Greece.
The Attica facility will be built in a joint venture - dubbed Data In Scale - between Edgnex’s parent company Damac and electricity utility PPC Group.
The first phase will see an €150 million investment to develop the initial 12.5MW of capacity, with plans to scale up to 25MW in subsequent phases.
Construction is set to begin in Q1 2025.
Other specifications of the facility have not yet been shared.
“By leveraging Edgnex’s expertise in delivering reliable and agile infrastructure and DAMAC’s proven capabilities in large-scale developments, we are building a future-ready facility to empower businesses with secure, scalable, and high-performance data solutions,” said Hussain Sajwani, Founder of Damac.
Georgios Stassis, PPC group chairman and CEO, added: “By merging PPC’s energy expertise with Damac’s global leadership in data center development, we are building infrastructure that will empower businesses, drive Greece’s digital transformation, and position the country as a pivotal player in Southeast Europe’s ecosystem.”
PPC is a leading South-East European electric utility company, with activities in electricity generation, distribution, and sale of advanced energy products. The company operates in Greece, Romania, and North Macedonia.
UAE property firm Damac Group set up Edgnex (aka Damac Data Centres) in 2021. The company is building facilities in Saudi Arabia in Dammam and Riyadh that will deliver 55MW by 2025.
Edgnex is also developing a data center in Turkey in partnership with Vodafone.
Damac first announced plans to expand into APAC in October 2023; as well as a facility in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, the company is developing a 15MW data center in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another in Bangkok, Thailand.
Edgnex is also planning a data center in Amman, Jordan. Damac and Edgnex last year signed an agreement to build a data center and cable landing station at the new King Abdullah Economic City outside Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
Most recently in October, Edgnex announced plans to develop a 40MW data center in Madrid, Spain.
Greece does not have a large data center market. The few that exist are mainly concentrated in Athens, with Digital Realty, Sparkle, Cloudrock, and Data 4 having a presence in the city.
