UAE data center firm Edgnex is expanding its plans in Thailand.
Bloomberg reports Edgnex’s parent, Damac Group, is investing around $1 billion in a data center project in Thailand.
Edgnex Data Centers plans to invest more than 32 billion baht (~$1bn) in three to four data center projects though a joint venture with local data center provider Proen Corp., the companies said this week. Edgnex will hold a 70 percent stake in the JV and take responsibility for data center operations.
The first – and previously announced facility – is to be located in downtown Bangkok. It will go live by March with an initial 5MW of capacity and eventually expanded to 20MW.
“We are excited to expand our investment further into Southeast Asia (SEA) and specifically into Thailand, a country that has shown immense potential for growth in digital innovation and smart technologies,” said Hussain Sajwani, Founder of Damac Group.
Kittipan Sri-bua-iam, CEO of Poren Corp Public Company Limited, added: “We are very excited about this partnership with Edgnex Data Centers by Damac, which is increasingly becoming a key player in the data center business with a solid footprint across SEA.”
The Damac-owned firm officially announced plans for a two-building campus in the Rama 9 CBD area of the capital city in June.
The company previously said the first phase of the 19,000 sqm (204,515 sq ft), multi-story, Tier III-quality campus is scheduled to be operational by 2026. The first building will offer 10MW, followed by an additional 10MW in the second building.
UAE property firm Damac Group set up Edgnex (aka Damac Data Centres) in 2021. The company is building facilities in Saudi Arabia in Dammam and Riyadh, which will deliver 55MW by 2025.
Damac first announced plans to expand into APAC in October 2023; as well as a facility in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, the company is developing a 15MW data center in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Edgnex is also planning a data center in Amman, Jordan. Damac and Edgnex last year signed an agreement to build a data center and cable landing station at the new King Abdullah Economic City outside Jeddah in Saudi.
The company is also developing a data center in Turkey in partnership with Vodafone.
Proen Corp is a Thai data center firm. The company has two facilities in operation in Bangkok totaling 7MW and 12,000 sqm (129,165 sq ft).
