Amazon has revealed plans to invest $10 billion for the expansion of its data center infrastructure in North Carolina.

The investment will be used to support the company's cloud and AI services, and is expected to bring 500 full time jobs to the region.

The company will focus the investment on Richmond County, located on the central southern border of North Carolina.

“Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work and innovate, and I am pleased that North Carolina will stay at the forefront of all that’s ahead as we continue to attract top technology companies like Amazon,” said North Carolina governor Josh Stein. “Amazon’s investment is among the largest in state history and will bring hundreds of good-paying jobs and an economic boost to Richmond County.”

“Amazon's $10 billion investment in North Carolina underscores our commitment to driving innovation and advancing the future of cloud computing and AI technologies,” added David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer. “This investment will position North Carolina as a hub for cutting-edge technology, create hundreds of high-skilled jobs, and drive significant economic growth. We look forward to partnering with state and local leaders, local suppliers, and educational institutions to nurture the next generation of talent.”

In addition to the data center investment, Amazon is launching a Richmond County Community Fund aimed at supporting STEM education, sustainability and environment, economic development, future workforce development, and homelessness, hunger, health, and well-being. The company will contribute $150,000 to the fund.

Amazon said in the announcement that it has invested $12bn in the state since 2010, though this seems tied to its other businesses, with the company's cloud segment, Amazon Web Services (AWS), not listing a cloud region nor Edge location in the state. The nearest AWS region is US East, based in Northern Virginia.

In 2015, Amazon announced plans to build a 208MW wind farm in the state, which is operated by Spanish company Iberdrola. The company said that it has also invested in two solar farms in the state.

The majority of data centers in North Carolina are located around Charlotte, with a secondary market in Raleigh. In April 2025, Digital Realty filed to develop a 400MW data center campus in Charlotte, the state capital. Google also operates a campus near the city.

Outside of Charlotte, Apple operates a campus in Maiden, Catawba County, and filed to expand it earlier this year. Microsoft is also currently developing a campus in Catawba County, having announced plans to spend at least $1 billion on four data centers in the area in 2022. One of those projects is located in Maiden, with the company breaking ground in April 2024.

In September 2024, PowerHouse expressed an interest in developing a significant data center campus in the state.
