Microsoft has broken ground on a new data center campus outside Charlotte, North Carolina.
The company this week announced it had started work on its Boyd Farms data center, located off Zeb Haynes Road in Maiden, a town in Catawba and Lincoln counties.
“Data center construction began April 1, 2024,” the company said in a blog update. “The general contractor, Morgan Construction Company, is preparing the site by clearing and grading it. From there they will move into excavation work and continue construction through the Spring of 2025.”
Specifications of the data center development haven't been shared.
According to a recent zoning application, the development is located at 1260 Old Maiden Rd.
Microsoft first announced plans to invest in North Carolina in 2022, saying it would invest at least $1 billion in developing four data centers in Catawba County over the next decade.
At the time, local press reported the data centers would be located along Tate Boulevard in Hickory, behind the Walmart in Conover, along Stover Court in Newton, and on 300 acres along Zeb Haynes Road west of Maiden.
The Maiden development, located some 40 miles northwest of Charlotte, is reportedly known as Project Yoga.
Apple has a data center in Maiden, opening the facility in 2009.
