Local press, including Virginia Business and the Virginian Pilot, reports that the Virginia Beach Development Authority this month agreed to sell nine acres of land in the Corporate Landing Business Park to Globalinx for $1.8 million.

The land will reportedly support the third phase of its expansion in Virginia Beach, which would include an 85,000-square-foot (7,896 sqm), 25MW facility.

The $65 million project will support additional cable landing stations as well as carrier-neutral colocation and interconnection space. Timelines for development weren’t shared.

Announced in 2016, work on the first phase of the Globalinx campus started around 2018, and the first phase came online in 2019. The company is developing a second phase expansion on the campus.

The sale comes, however, as Virginia Beach officials consider a one-year moratorium on data center development. The Virginia Beach city council is set to vote on a resolution blocking new permitting this week.

Globalinx is also planning to develop a backup data center in Portsmouth, a city some 20 miles west of its existing Virginia Beach site.

The company is also looking to build a cable landing station in Ocean City, Maryland, to support Amazon’s FastNet subsea cable. Worcester County is looking to block the development via its own moratorium.
