Pan-African digital infrastructure firm Paratus has launched a new teleport in Pretoria, South Africa.

The company this week announced the inauguration of the Goedehoop Teleport in Doornkloof, some 50 miles north of Johannesburg.

Managing director of Paratus South Africa, Kallie Carlsen, said: “This teleport’s quality is attributable to our hard work and dedication, and we are excited to launch it. The fact that we are also offering colocation services to other satellite operators shows our commitment and our expertise in building world-class infrastructure.”

He continued: “We offer an unequaled service across the entire region. Goedehoop is a major investment for Paratus; its importance cannot be overstated as it makes our offering in the region unequaled and confirms our innate strength for always providing high-quality connectivity.”

Paratus broke ground on the teleport in March 2023. Specifications of the facility weren’t shared, but the company said the site will be the group’s largest satellite infrastructure project to date and will be capable of hosting other providers’ and customers’ infrastructure.

Paratus did say that the site offered diverse north and south fiber routes, A&B uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems, 90 hours of generator autonomy, and “world-class” HVAC systems.

Paratus entered South Africa in 2006, and in 2016 acquired local communications provider Maxwell Technology. The company then acquired a teleport in South Africa in 2019, but didn’t disclose the location.

Paratus Group operates four Tier III-quality data centers across southern Africa, located in Angola, Namibia, and Zambia. Earlier year, the company activated the Namibian branch of the Equiano Subsea Cable, for which it developed a cable landing station.

On its website, Paratus says its network comprises five teleports, three of which are owned and located in Angola, Namibia, and South Africa. Last year, OneWeb signed a deal with Paratus to place a satellite gateway at Paratus’ teleport in Luanda, Angola.
