Giga Computing and Empyrion Digital are teaming up to develop an AI data center in Taiwan.

The data center dubbed TW1 will have up to 7MW of IT capacity and is expected to be operational in 2027.

Plans for TW1 were first revealed by Empyrion in November 2024. The company noted at the time that it would aim for a PUE of 1.33 or lower.

Construction on the data center is expected to begin in 2025, and will be located in the Neihu Technology Park.

Giga Computing is a subsidiary of Gigabyte. The data center will use Gigabyte's GigaPod offering, a modular compute cluster designed for AI workloads. Giga Computing will handle the planning, deployment, and commission of the cluster.

Gigabyte spun off Giga Computing in January 2023. Giga Computing is a fully-owned data center-focused subsidiary that focuses on the development and sale of servers and server motherboards.

TW1 will use "advanced cooling technologies" and will feature building-integrated photovoltaics.

Empyrion was launched by Asian infrastructure investment fund Seraya Partners in 2021. The company currently operates a 7.7MW data center in Singapore and is constructing a 29.4MW facility in Seoul, South Korea, with more markets under development.

In September, Empyrion announced it would be expanding into Japan with plans for a five-story, 25MW data center facility.

Taipei is currently home to operators such as Vantage, NTT, and Taiwan Mobile. Apple is reportedly looking to develop a data center in Taiwan. Other major international companies developing in Taiwan include Google, Amazon Web Services (AWS), which shared plans for a Taipei cloud region in June 2024, and Microsoft.
