The Nasdaq-listed firm this week announced the successful energization of its 1.4GW Sweetwater 1 data center site in Texas.

The firm’s two Sweetwater sites – located outside Sweetwater in Fisher County, West Texas – are set to total 2GW across 2,200 acres at full build-out. A direct fiber loop between Sweetwater 1 & 2 is also planned.

Power delivery at the 1,700-acre Sweetwater 1 is expected to ramp progressively in line with the phased construction and commissioning of data centers at the site.

Energization on the 500-acre Sweetwater 2 is expected in 2028.

Daniel Roberts, co-founder and co-CEO at Iren, said: “Delivering Sweetwater 1 substation energization on schedule reflects our disciplined execution, the strength of our supply chain relationships, and the efficiency of our vertically integrated development model. It is another example of our ability to design and construct large-scale infrastructure reliably and at speed to meet market demand."

Iren is a cryptominer turned AI cloud provider with data centers located across Canada and the US. Currently, it has some 23,000 GPUs in its fleet, and in October said that contracts had been secured for around 11,000 of them. Microsoft is a major customer.

Formerly known as Iris Energy, the company is in the midst of a pivot away from cryptomining towards its AI cloud business. While it is still mining Bitcoin, the firm is winding down its mining operations and diverting cash flow to its AI business.

Iren this week announced it was also set to acquire cloud infrastructure software provider Mirantis in a deal worth $625 million.
