Tower firm SBA Communications has launched an Edge data center in Texas.
Jared Benson, director of strategic Edge infrastructure at SBA, this week announced that an SBA Edge site is officially live in Corpus Christi.
“We are thrilled to announce the completion and launch of our brand-new, multi-tenant, multi-use edge data center and fiber interconnection exchange in the heart of Corpus Christi, Texas,” he said. “As digital gravity shifts closer to the Edge, South Texas is positioning itself as a vital frontier for next-generation digital infrastructure. This carrier-neutral facility is built specifically to address the skyrocketing demands of Mexico-US Internet IP transit, distributed computing, real-time cloud environments, and local AI inference workloads.”
Full details on location and capacity weren’t shared. The company said, however, that the facility’s carrier-neutral meet-me room can reportedly support data speeds up to 400 Gbps.
Leasing is officially open at the site. Benson added that Phase II will commence soon, offering turnkey, scalable deployments optimized for high-performance computing (HPC) and localized AI infrastructure.
Founded in 1989 and headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, SBA is an owner and operator of wireless communications infrastructure with operations in sixteen markets throughout the Americas, Africa, and the Philippines. The company has some 17,000 towers in operation in the US.
The company began exploring Edge computing modules at tower sites in 2018 in partnership with Packet before its acquisition by Equinix.
One of the first places the companies trialed an at-tower deployment was Foxborough, Massachusetts. The firm has also deployed one in Arlington, Texas.
Benson has recently said the company is working on a second Edge site in Arlington and has one deployed near Jacksonville, Florida.
In November 2022, SBA CEO Jeff Stoops said the company had “30 to 40” Edge sites in operation or development. By May 2023, that number had increased to “somewhere between 40 and 50” sites.
SBA also operates three larger data centers in Chicago and Jacksonville in the US and São Paulo in Brazil. Those three sites total 21MW and more than 400,000 sq ft (37,161 sqm).
