China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) has been granted permission to switch off its 2G network in June of next year.

The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) confirmed CMHK's approval to retire its legacy network in June.

As such, CMHK will become the latest carrier to shut down its 2G mobile network and will cease the provision of its 2G services on June 23, 2026.

The OFCA has told customers that still use 2G devices to upgrade to handsets that operate 4G instead.

OFCA said it had approved the switch off due to the very low proportion of customers affected, including customers of 2G pre-paid services, those who are still using 2G handsets/devices for connection to CMHK's network, and those using handsets/devices that do not support the VoLTE (Note) function.

At present, less than 2.3 percent of CMHK's total mobile customer base remains on its 2G network.

"For customers who choose not to continue the service or not to replace their handsets/devices, CMHK will make reasonable service termination arrangements and provide them with sufficient advance notification and customer service support. Moreover, the CA has required CMHK to maintain satisfactory 2G services until the scheduled service cessation date," said OFCA.

CMHK previously retired its 3G network earlier this year.

Initially founded in 1994 as PEOPLES Telephone Company Limited, China Mobile acquired the carrier in 2005.
