China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) has been given the go-ahead to retire its 3G mobile network in Hong Kong.
As such, China Mobile's Hong Kong subsidiary confirmed it will retire the network on June 30, 2025.
According to CMHK, the number of customers using its 3G services was less than 0.25 percent.
The carrier will retire the service in two months after being given approval by the Hong Kong Communications Authority to switch-off the network.
"To ensure smooth transition to a higher generation of mobile services, CMHK has been advising the individual customers to upgrade their 3G mobile phone, devices, or SIM cards since the last quarter of 2023," the company said in a statement.
CMHK serves more than eight million mobile subscribers across Hong Kong.
The carrier didn't specify what it will do with the 3G spectrum, though it's likely it will reallocate the spectrum for its 4G and 5G mobile networks.
Initially founded in 1994 as PEOPLES Telephone Company Limited, China Mobile acquired the carrier in 2005.
UK telco Virgin Media kicked off its 3G retirement earlier this month.
