Verizon CEO Dan Schulman confirmed that the carrier has signed a $1 billion fiber deal with tech giant Google.
He confirmed that Verizon will provide Google with its dark fiber to connect the hyperscalers data centers.
Schulman made the comments during the company's Q2 earnings call last week, noting that further deals will be announced later this year.
According to the CEO, these agreements are "expected to be worth multiple billions of dollars in revenue over the next several years."
"These are long-duration, high-quality contracted revenue streams from some of the most demanding infrastructure customers in the world," he said.
It was also confirmed on Verizon's earnings call that Schulman has extended his contract at the telco until December 31, 2028, adding an additional year to his planned stay at the carrier. Former PayPal CEO Schulman was appointed as CEO in October of last year.
He was bullish about the company's fiber assets, noting they are able to service the demand for the data center industry.
"Whether it’s dark or lit, our assets are suddenly in tremendous demand for that data center connectivity," he added.
"We have thousands of central offices, many of which we’re taking copper out of, and we are retrofitting them to be remote data centers that are power ready, permitted, fully redundant infrastructure. We did a small trial on that and sold out capability in 24 hours, so we’re seeing large demand for that as well."
He added that while demand for data center connectivity is exploding, Schulman said that infrastructure at the Edge will play a key role in supporting the strong demand to power inference models and applications that require ultra-low latency, such as robotics or remote surgery, and autonomous driving.
Verizon reported total revenue of $34.25bn for the quarter, down 0.7 percent Year-on-Year (YoY).
During the quarter, the telco reported that mobility and broadband service revenue grew by 2.8 percent and is forecasted to grow to approximately four percent during the fourth quarter. It comes as the carrier added 550,000 total mobility and broadband customers in Q2, up from 230,000 for the same period last year
Verizon added 184,000 postpaid phone net additions in Q2, which is the most consumer second-quarter postpaid phone net additions the carrier has posted in the past five years.
