The UK government has officially confirmed the appointment of Sir Ian Cheshire as the new chair of Ofcom.

His appointment was finalized following his recent pre-appointment hearing at the Science, Innovation and Technology select committee.

Ofcom is the UK government's media regulator and competition authority for the broadcasting, Internet, telecommunications, and postal industries.

The UK government named Cheshire as its preferred choice for its new chair back in April, stating at the time that he would be awarded a four-year term.

Cheshire was previously chair of Channel 4, a role which he held for three years until April 2025. He was also the boss of the B&Q owner, Kingfisher, for six years.

He replaces former BBC chair, Michael Grade, who stepped down at the end of April.

“It's a privilege to take on the role of chair of Ofcom to drive forward our important agenda, tackling some of the most pressing issues impacting society today. Together with my fellow board members and Ofcom’s talented team, I look forward to working effectively with government to serve the interests of UK citizens and consumers," said Sir Ian Cheshire.

In Ofcom's post announcing his appointment, the government stated that a key focus of his role will be the effective implementation of the Online Safety Act.
