Hutchison Telecommunications Macau will cease its operations in the territory later this year after giving up its 4G mobile telecoms license.

The Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) confirmed the plans, stating that Hutchison will cease all mobile services in Macau from December 1, 2026.

The parent company of telecoms brand Three has decided to exit the market following a "commercial decision made by the company based on its own operational circumstances," noted the CTT.

As part of the company's exit from Macau, where the carrier has an estimated 140,000 customers, the telco has reached an agreement with Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau, SA (CTM) to facilitate the transfer of its users to CTM’s network.

"CTT will closely monitor the entire process, urging Hutchison to fully fulfill its social responsibilities, ensure a smooth transition for users, protect employees’ legal rights, and minimize any impact on the public," stated the regulator.

It means that Macau will be served by two main mobile operators, CTM and China Telecom (Macau). Both companies offer 5G mobile services, while Hutchison is only running on 4G.

Hutchison's planned exit comes two years after SmarTone also stopped operating in Macau.
