Swedish telecoms company Telia has announced plans to cut 900 jobs by the end of this year.
The carrier confirmed the plans this morning, noting that the cuts are necessary as part of the company's cost-saving strategy.
Telia said the layoffs, which will impact its operations across the Nordics and Baltics, will generate savings of SEK 1 billion ($99.96 million) in annual gross savings.
At present, Telia employs around 14,000 across Sweden, Finland, Norway, Estonia, and Lithuania. The layoffs represent around six percent of the carrier's total workforce.
Telia notes that the cuts are part of the group's intentions to "localize its operations further and strengthen the role of its country units in meeting evolving customer needs and delivering profitable growth."
The cuts will cover positions across all units, including both employees and resource consultants, and additional reductions in the company’s operating cost base. These proposed layoffs will be completed by December 31, 2026.
It's just the latest set of layoffs announced by Telia, which also confirmed in January that it was cutting 600 jobs.
The company's focus of pushing its cost-savings strategy goes back further to December 2024, when Telia announced at the time that it had finalized its planned organizational restructure, cutting 3,000 jobs during that process.
“We’re building the future Telia. Our efforts so far have put us on the right track, and further localization means doubling down on what we know gets results," said Patrik Hofbauer, president and CEO of Telia, on today's cuts. "We must always become even simpler, faster, and more efficient in everything we do. We want to empower our countries more, get the utmost from our common technology unit and other group functions, and sharpen Telia’s edge in a very competitive market.
"We recognize it will involve difficult decisions and will require support for all our people. We believe that Telia can perform even better, and we see an opportunity to become a leading European telco.”
In total, 260 jobs will be lost in Sweden, 280 will be cut in Finland, and 150 will be cut in Norway. A further 110 will be lost in Lithuania, with 100 set to go in Estonia.
The cuts are subject to customary union negotiations, added Telia, which said it expects to book restructuring charges of approximately SEK 600 million ($59.9m) in Q4 2026, with cash flow effect mainly in 2027.
