DeepMind, Google’s AI research lab, is seeking a nuclear expert to join its team in Mountain View, California.
The job listing calls for applications from “highly qualified physicists and nuclear engineers for the position of nuclear subject matter expert (SME) in the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and high-yield Explosives (CBRNE) team within the Responsible Development and Innovation (ReDI) team.”
DeepMind said that the successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating and mitigating safety risks of frontier AI models (primarily but not limited to LLMs) in the nuclear domain, with a specific focus on model assistance in fission, fusion, and thermonuclear weapons proliferation, and radiation hydrodynamics.
The position offers a salary range of $174,000 to $252,000, plus a 15 percent bonus target, equity, and additional benefits.
According to the job listing, the role's main responsibilities will be to construct threat models prioritizing vulnerabilities, threat actors, and scenarios related to fission, fusion, thermonuclear weapons development, and high-energy-density dual-use regimes. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the creation of robust evaluation datasets of complex physics and nuclear engineering prompts to elicit the model's maximum capability and determine how to uplift malicious actors. The role will also require collaboration with engineers to design mitigations that block harmful outputs without overly degrading the model's scientific utility and support the development and refinement of Google’s nuclear safety policy.
The listing comes as data center interest in the nuclear sector has hit an all-time high. In October of last year, DeepMind announced a research partnership with nuclear fusion firm Commonwealth Fusion Systems to utilize AI to support the commercialization of the technology.
