Amazon Web Services (AWS) has had its plans for a data center project in Buckinghamshire, UK, approved.

Buckinghamshire Council has given the greenlight for the project at Iver, which will include 27 backup generators and replace 17 industrial and warehouse units, as per a report from the Bucks Free Press.

Planning officers noted that there was some risk of the project causing harm to the surrounding landscape, but that the benefits of the project, including the need for data centers and potential employment opportunities, outweighed those costs.

As part of the agreement, Amazon will also provide £600,382 towards projects to offset air pollution related to the development and will monitor emissions from its generators. In addition, Amazon will invest £73,000 in improving public rights of way near the site,

Amazon is still required to submit more information relating to its construction traffic, drainage, and water use.

Amazon Data Services originally filed for the project in October 2025, having purchased the site for £132.5 million ($165.6m) in an off-market deal in 2022.

According to those filings, the data center campus would span 30,525 sqm (328,560 sq ft) and would see the demolition of all existing structures on site and development of a single two-story data center building, MV building, substation compound including two switchrooms and electrical infrastructure, and a generator yard with 27 back-up generators.

The generators have since been stated to mostly use hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) for fuel.

The site will use direct evaporative cooling fed by outside air for most of the year, and adiabatic cooling with rainwater as the primary supply and mains water as a back-up during hotter days.

Iver is a few miles east of Slough, the largest data center hub in the greater London area and home to many large-scale developments.

Amazon Web Services currently has one UK cloud region located in the Bristol area (though it is named as 'London') that launched in 2016. A new availability zone was added in August 2026.

The firm is linked to several other developments across the UK, including Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire; Hayes, Middlesex; Didcot, Oxfordshire; Swindon, Wiltshire; Bracknell, Berkshire.
