Alongside a push for large training clusters, AI labs OpenAI and Anthropic are looking for smaller data center deployments.

The two companies are in talks for 20-30MW capacity deals at data centers, likely for inference workloads, CNBC reports.

OpenAI has discussed such deals with companies in the US and Nordics, while Anthropic has held similar conversations in the UK and Nordics.

“We’re building a diversified compute portfolio to meet growing demand for AI around the world,” OpenAI said in a statement.

“Different workloads need different infrastructure, so we have conversations with a range of partners and assess opportunities based on our requirements, performance, reliability, timing and cost. We don’t comment on specific commercial discussions.”

Anthropic has signed at least $517 billion in compute capacity leases in the past 11 months as it expands its capacity to train and serve its Claude models.
