AI lab Anthropic has reportedly signed more than a dozen letters of intent with multiple US data center developers.
As reported by The Information, citing people with direct knowledge of the plans, this is part of Anthropic's efforts to control its servers and AI infrastructure, thereby reducing long-term compute costs.
Details of the data center companies Anthropic is working with have not been provided, nor have the locations of the data center projects.
According to the publication, Anthropic is also seeing an arrangement with Google in which the cloud and search giant would provide a financial guarantee for its lease payments, akin to the arrangement Google has with AI cloud Fluidstack.
Anthropic is also working with Fluidstack as part of the Broadcom, Apollo, and Blackstone's 20GW XPU platform, the first gigawatt of which will be deployed in Fluidstack data centers starting in mid-2026.
The letters of intent represent a total of more than 1GW of IT capacity, say the sources. They are non-binding, and will enable the company to perform due diligence on the providers and their sites.
To date, Anthropic has turned to cloud providers for its compute capacity - having committed to renting more than 10GW of servers from cloud providers thus far, including a $200 billion agreement signed with Google.
Anthropic has previously signed large cloud capacity deals with Akamai, Amazon Web Services – including a massive cluster of the cloud firm’s custom Trainium hardware, CoreWeave, and a $50bn partnership with AI cloud firm Fluidstack.
Beyond the cloud computing agreements, Anthropic has also been on a data center staff hiring spree, and has signed a data center lease with SpaceX/xAI, in which it will lease the entire Colossus 1 data center from Elon Musk's company, in a deal worth $1.25 billion a month. It will also lease space out of the Colossus II data center.
In late May, Anthropic raised $65 billion in Series H funding. Shortly after, the company confidentially filed for an IPO with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
