A data center could be coming to eastern Iowa.

Local press, including WQAD News 8 and KWQC 6, report an unnamed company is looking to develop a facility on 46 acres off Highway 61, on land south of Maquoketa.

Maquoketa is a city in Jackson County, Iowa, some 60 miles east of Cedar Rapids.

Full details of the planned facility haven’t been shared. According to city council presentation documents shared at a meeting this week, the project is “small to mid-sized,” and an end-user has not yet been secured. The site would not be used for cryptocurrency.

The site, inside the city’s industrial park, is already zoned Heavy Industrial (I-3). The land could be sold for $25,000 per acre, suggesting a total price of $1.15 million.

City officials said the developer isn’t seeking any incentives and could benefit the local area economically. The unnamed firm would also cover any costs around infrastructure upgrades.

A number of local residents spoke out against the project at a city council meeting this week.
