Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Anthropic have deepened their partnership with a further $5 billion investment and a 5GW capacity agreement.

Under the new deal, Amazon is investing $5bn today, and could invest up to $20bn in the AI company in the future.

This builds on the $8bn Amazon has already injected into the company.

Anthropic, meanwhile, will lease up to 5GW of AI capacity from AWS as part of a commitment to spending more than $100 billion on AWS technologies over the next 10 years.

The compute capacity encompasses current and future generations of both AWS' custom Trainium AI chips and "tens of millions" of Graviton CPUs.

“Our custom AI silicon offers high performance at significantly lower cost for customers, which is why it’s in such hot demand," said Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon. "Anthropic's commitment to run its large language models on AWS Trainium for the next decade reflects the progress we've made together on custom silicon, as we continue delivering the technology and infrastructure our customers need to build with generative AI.”

"Our users tell us Claude is increasingly essential to how they work, and we need to build the infrastructure to keep pace with rapidly growing demand,” added Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic. "Our collaboration with Amazon will allow us to continue advancing AI research while delivering Claude to our customers, including the more than 100,000 building on AWS."

AWS and Anthropic have a long-standing relationship. In addition to Amazon's previous investment in the AI company, Anthropic is the end user of AWS' Project Rainier cluster. Rainier went live in October 2025 and is comprised of nearly 500,000 Tranium2 chips.

Earlier this week, DCD exclusively reported that Anthropic was seeking to lease data center capacity in Europe and Australia, as revealed by job listings from the company.

The company has historically relied on cloud providers, and alongside AWS has major Microsoft and Google contracts. All three hyperscalers are investors in the company.

In October, Google and Anthropic signed a 1GW+ cloud deal with access up to 1 million tensor processing units (TPUs), Google's AI accelerator chip. This April, Anthropic signed with Broadcom and Google for the supply of 3.5GW-worth of TPUs.

At the same time, Anthropic has pledged to invest $50bn in data centers in the US with Fluidstack. Those same projects are being financially supported by Google.
