Google and Anthropic have confirmed the massive cloud computing contract that will see Anthropic expand its use of Google Cloud.

Reports that the two were discussing a deal worth "tens of billions of dollars" emerged earlier this week.

Now confirmed in an announcement shared by Anthropic, the agreement will see the AI company using up to 1 million Google TPUs, and will bring "well over" a gigawatt of capacity online in 2026.

The exact financial value of the deal has not been shared, but was confirmed to indeed be in the realm of tens of billions of dollars.

“Anthropic’s choice to significantly expand its usage of TPUs reflects the strong price-performance and efficiency its teams have seen with TPUs for several years,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO at Google Cloud. “We are continuing to innovate and drive further efficiencies and increased capacity of our TPUs, building on our already mature AI accelerator portfolio, including our seventh-generation TPU, Ironwood.”

“Anthropic and Google have a longstanding partnership, and this latest expansion will help us continue to grow the compute we need to define the frontier of AI,” said Krishna Rao, CFO of Anthropic.

“Our customers - from Fortune 500 companies to AI-native startups - depend on Claude for their most important work, and this expanded capacity ensures we can meet our exponentially growing demand while keeping our models at the cutting edge of the industry.”

Anthropic uses three chip platforms to train its large language models: Amazon Web Services' Trainium chips, including via the Project Rainer supercluster; Nvidia GPUs; and Google Cloud's TPUs - using the latter since 2023.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees and directly competes with OpenAI through its Claude large language models. Google is a notable investor in the company, having invested around $2bn in 2023 and another $1bn in 2025.

In March of this year, court documents revealed Google held a 14 percent stake in the AI company.
