Blue Origin has appointed a new director for its TeraWave global communications network, aimed at data centers, governments, and businesses.

Leticia Ambriz joins from fellow Jeff Bezos business Amazon, where she was the head of product operations for Ring, Blink, Sidewalk, and Key for Business.

Announced earlier this year, TeraWave is a plan for 5,408 satellites in low- (LEO) and medium-Earth orbit (MEO) to create high-bandwidth links for businesses.

The project is not to be confused with Amazon LEO (formerly Kuiper), the Internet-from-space megaconstellation planned by Amazon, targeted more broadly at consumers.

TeraWave satellites are expected to communicate with Earth via optical at up to 6Tbps, and via RF at up to 144Gbps. The constellation will only be able to serve a max customer base of around 100,000.

Satellite deployment is expected to begin in the last quarter of 2027, with 5,280 systems in LEO and 128 in MEO.

"TeraWave is building a space-based connectivity network designed for tomorrow, with the goal of delivering connectivity anywhere on Earth," Ambriz said on LinkedIn.

"I’m looking forward to this new chapter, working alongside talented teams to scale operations, strengthen mechanisms, and help turn ambitious vision and goals into reality."

Ambriz spent 12 years at Amazon, and previously held roles at BlackBerry and Elcoteq. She joins former Amazon SVP of devices and services Dave Limp, who became Blue Origin CEO in late 2023.

Alongside TeraWave, the company plans to launch up to 51,600 satellites in sun-synchronous orbit as small data centers under its 'Project Sunrise' initiative.
