Jeff Bezos' private space company Blue Origin plans to deploy 5,408 satellites in low- (LEO) and medium-Earth orbit (MEO) to create a global communications network for data centers, governments, and businesses.

The newly announced TeraWave project is not to be confused with Amazon LEO (formerly Kuiper), the Internet-from-space megaconstellation planned by Amazon, the public company founded by Bezos.

Satellite deployment is expected to begin in the last quarter of 2027, with 5,208 systems in LEO and 200 in MEO.

They will communicate to the Earth via RF at up to 144Gbps, and via optical at up to 6Tbps.

While coverage will be global, the company noted that it will only be able to serve a max customer-base of around 100,000, whereas slower LEO constellations (including Amazon's) can serve millions.

"This network will service tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations," the company said.

"The TeraWave architecture consists of 5,408 optically interconnected satellites in LEO and MEO, reaching remote, rural, and suburban areas where diverse fiber paths are costly, technically infeasible, or slow to deploy, while providing additional route diversity and strengthening overall network resilience."

Blue Origin also plans to deploy in-space cloud computing capacity for satellite operators, while Bezos has said that he believes that there will be gigawatt data centers in space in 10+ years.
