According to ZincFive, the funding will be used to expand manufacturing capacity and scale commercial operations, targeting rising demand from AI data centers.

"This funding milestone underscores both our commercial maturity and the massive market opportunity ahead," said Tod Higinbotham, CEO of ZincFive. "We’ve moved beyond proving our technology – we’re scaling to meet contracted demand from the world’s leading hyperscalers and data center operators. This investment accelerates our commercial and manufacturing expansion and strengthens our ability to deliver on the significant commitments our customers have made to deploy ZincFive’s battery technology at scale.”

ZincFive develops nickel-zinc (NiZn) battery systems for immediate power applications. Last month, the company launched a new NiZn battery cabinet for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. According to the company, the BC 2 AI is the industry’s first AI-optimized battery system purpose-built for dual-mode operation, supporting both AI dynamic workloads and outage protection. The UPS system features 90Ah NiZn batteries designed for high-intensity discharge cycles.

ZincFive has been a proponent of nickel-zinc batteries for more than ten years and recently claimed to have more than 1GW worth of deployments. The company claims its nickel-zinc batteries offer a small footprint, minimal maintenance, and high reliability, without the danger of thermal runaway.

The company has already seen a range of deployments across the data center sector. Data center firm Corscale has been using ZincFive’s nickel-zinc batteries at its Gainesville Crossing data center campus in Northern Virginia since 2022. Wyoming Hyperscale has also deployed ZincFive’s batteries.

ABB has previously added ZincFive’s batteries to its UPS offering, as well as Vertiv.
