Japanese energy storage firm PowerX has unveiled a new mounted battery energy storage system designed for data centers.
The product concept, dubbed "PowerX Energy Blade," is a high-output, rack-mounted lithium-ion battery storage system. The company claims that the unit will be optimized for rapid charge and discharge, enabling bidirectional response to grid supply-demand fluctuations within milliseconds. In addition, the company claims that the system supports 800V DC power delivery required by the latest AI GPUs and can also replace conventional battery backup units
The system is currently under development, with availability targeted for 2027, and the company is now seeking partners for implementation.
According to the company, the system will open new revenue schemes for the data center sector through participation in grid flexibility markets and demand response programs. PowerX claims that the battery will also unlock practical benefits such as earlier grid connection under flexible connection schemes, more favorable power supply contracts, and the ability to maximize server deployment within existing power budgets.
PowerX is a large-scale developer of battery energy storage systems (BESS) within the Japanese market. It has also commercialized a containerized data center product, dubbed “Mega Power DC,” which the company said draws on its experience in container assembly, direct current power control, and thermal management. The company plans to begin mass production of the modular solution following market validation.
In February, the firm partnered with Internet Initiative Japan to explore the development of containerized data centers integrated with BESS.
