US semiconductor company Xilinx has completed its acquisition of Solarflare Communications, which it first invested in back in 2017.
The company announced it would acquire the provider of high-performance, low latency networking solutions for an undisclosed sum back in April, in order to offer converged SmartNIC solutions for the data center market.
Xilinx is best known for creating field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) - integrated circuits that can be reconfigured using software.
Last year, Xilinx's newly appointed CEO Victor Peng told DCD that the “the data center will be our largest area for growth, and we will make it out highest priority.”
Solarflare’s networking technology and team will become part of Xilinx’s Data Center Group, with Xilinx aiming to combine its FPGA, MPSoC and ACAP solutions with Solarflare's ultra-low latency network interface card (NIC) technology and Onload application acceleration software.
"Earlier this year, the two of us demonstrated a single-chip FPGA-based 100Gb SmartNIC, processing 100 million packets per-second receive and transmit, all at less than 75 watts," Xilinx said in a blog post. "Fast forward to today, when we proudly announce that the Xilinx and Solarflare families have officially been combined... allowing us to better serve our data center customers.”
