Somalian telco Somtel has launched the country's first 5G network.
Somtel, which serves more than four million mobile subscribers across the country, confirmed the launch earlier this week.
Somtel is co-owned by Dahabshiil Group, and has previously launched 4G LTE, VoLTE, and eSIM technology in the region.
"The rapid connections enabled by 5G will unlock a world of possibilities and empower us to harness the benefits of emerging technologies," said Abdirashid Duale, CEO of Dahabshiil Group.
Details around the spectrum band and cities connected with 5G were not revealed by Duale.
A number of African countries have launched 5G services in the past couple of years, notably Botswana, Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar, Nigeria, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.
