South Korean telecoms firm SK Telecom has launched a new dedicated data center unit.

The company this week announced the launch of SK Hyper, a new company dedicated to AI data center business development.

The new unit is being seeded with an investment of up to KRW 750 billion ($508m) by 2030 and will be a wholly owned subsidiary of SK Telecom.

Chung Suk-geun has been appointed CEO of SK Hyper. He was previously SKT’s Head of the AI CIC (Company-in-Company) and has had roles at Naver, Samsung, and Inicis.

SK Telecom said SK Hyper will aim to build out 15GW of capacity by 2035. The new unit will be responsible for securing sites, constructing and operating substations, acquiring customers, and commercializing data centers.

The unit's first project will be a gigawatt-scale campus in Ulsan, followed by gigawatt-scale sites in the Chungcheong and Honam regions.

"SK Hyper's role is to turn SK Group's blueprint for Asia’s AI Infrastructure Hub into reality," said Chung Suk-geun, CEO of SK Hyper. "Through systematic and rapid execution, we will secure core infrastructure and customers, and contribute to Korea's advancement to AI G3."

SK Telecom belongs to SK Group, one of South Korea’s largest conglomerates.

The firm has been developing the Ulsan campus since September 2025. Amazon is a partner on the project.

Last year saw SK C&C, the IT subsidiary of SK Group, sell its data center business to sister company SK Broadband. The latter firm operated nine facilities, including sites in Yangju, Seocho, Ilsan, and Bundang.
