Singtel’s data center arm, Nxera, has topped out a new data center in Johor, Malaysia.

The company's CEO, Bill Chang, announced the topping out ceremony on LinkedIn over the weekend.

“Really happy to see the rapid, smooth, and safe progress of the buildout of this large-scale AI DC specially designed to host some of the most demanding AI workloads in the industry,” Chang said.

TM Nxera, a joint venture between Telekom Malaysia and Nxera, added: “This ceremony marks a significant milestone, reflecting the progress, effort, and dedication that have brought us to this stage. With the successful completion of the structural phase, we have taken an important step forward in bringing the TM Nxera data center to life.”

Plans for the data center were originally unveiled in June 2024, with its initial phase expected to offer 64MW. The company subsequently broke ground at the facility in July of the same year. The first phase of the 280MW campus, located in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, is due live in 2026.

As well as sites in Singapore, Nxera is developing several facilities around Southeast Asia in partnership with local players and expects to grow its total capacity from 200MW to 400MW in the coming years. With more facilities in Batam and Johor due online in the second half of 2026, Nxera’s operational and pipeline capacity is expected to more than double from 200MW in 2026.

Investment firm KKR acquired a 20 percent stake in Singtel’s data center business for $800 million in 2023. KKR and Singtel recently acquired a majority stake in APAC data center STT GDC.

Located in Malaysia’s south, Johor is just across the border from Singapore. Though Singapore is starting to ease restrictions around its ongoing moratorium on new data center developments, Johor has grown a sizeable data center market of its own as developments overspill from the city-state.

Data center developers and operators in Johor include PDG, AirTrunk, Equinix, Keppel, Bridge DC, Vantage, Digital Edge, and others.
