A Singapore-Japan subsea cable will be built by a Singtel-led consortium and NEC Corporation.
Singtel is a Singaporean telco, and NEC is a Japanese telco.
The 8,900km cable, called the Asia United Gateway East (AUG East), will have branching lines connected to Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Taiwan. Completion is targeted for Q3 2029.
No information about the cable's planned capacity or fiber count - beyond being "high" - was shared.
The Singtel-led consortium includes US-based Amazon Web Services and Microsoft; Japan’s Arteria Networks; Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom; South Korea’s Dreamline; the Philippines’ Globe Telecom; Malaysia’s Telekom Malaysia; and Brunei’s Unified National Networks.
Alan Tan, chairperson of the Asia United Gateway Cable Management Committee and Director, Submarine Cable Planning at Singtel, said: “We’ve initiated AUG East to connect the digital hubs of Singapore and Japan, which will strengthen and improve network diversity and reliability along an important route.”
The geographical advantages of Singapore and Japan make both of them popular locations for cable landing stations.
Singtel also leads consortia for the 6,000km Asia Link Cable System (ALC) and the 19,200km Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6 cable system.
NEC has involvement with the East Micronesia Cable System, which recently reached its second cable landing station in the island of Kosrae, a constituent island of the Federated States of Micronesia, two US-Japan cables, and the Taiwan-Philippines-US cable system.
