German power producer RWE has reportedly sold a former UK coal plant to Amazon.

As reported by Bloomberg, RWE revealed in its earnings report last month that it had sold an idle site in the UK to an unnamed hyperscaler for $265 million.

Deutsche Bank analysts Olly Jeffery and James Brand are now claiming that the buyer was Amazon, but did not tell Bloomberg their source.

DCD previously exclusively reported that Amazon Web Services (AWS) was interested in the site in 2021, and has since verified that, in recent application documents, the applicant is now listed as "Amazon Data Services."

Under the pseudonym Willow Developments LLC, AWS filed planning documents in 2021 proposing the development of two data centers at the power station, located in Oxfordshire, that would have a total floorspace of 54,760 sqm (590,000 sq ft).

The Vale of White Horse District Council's planning committee approved the application in July 2021, but the project then went quiet.

In the past few months, however, a number of applications have been filed regarding the project, now under "Amazon Data Services," and describe the project as consisting of the "demolition of the existing building and structures on site, and all other associated site clearance works," followed by the construction of a single data center building. Site plan diagrams support that a single building will be built.

The application is currently in the consultation process, and a target decision date has been given of March 3, 2026.

A combined coal and oil power plant, Didcot A opened in 1970, but was demolished between 2014 and 2020. At peak, it was capable of generating 1,440MW.

Elsewhere in the UK, Amazon filed to develop a data center campus in Iver, Buckinghamshire, at the Ridgeway Distribution Centre, in October 2025.

The company currently has one UK cloud region located in the Bristol area (though it is named 'London') that launched in 2016, and has been linked to other projects including Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire; Hayes, Middlesex; Swindon, Wiltshire; Bracknell, Berkshire.
