Prime Data Centers has started work on a new facility in California.

The company this week broke ground on SMF02, the second data center on its Sacramento campus.

Located close to Prime’s SMF01 data center at 2408 AK Street, the 150,000 sq ft (13,935 sqm) facility will offer 18MW of critical IT load capacity.

“Sacramento has proven itself as a strategic growth market, and SMF02 is a direct response to the demand we are seeing from customers deploying AI and high-performance computing workloads at scale,” said Michael Hildebrand, SVP of Product Delivery at Prime Data Centers. “With SMF01 operational and SMF02 now underway, our Sacramento campus gives customers a long-term home for mission-critical infrastructure in one of California’s most important technology regions.”

The two-story multi-tenant facility will be served by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) and feature a closed-loop cooling system to reduce water use. Prime has tapped Clune Construction as the general contractor for the project.

Our relationship reflects the trust we've built together on a national level. Construction will support approximately 250 on-site workers at peak, with additional economic activity generated through local subcontractors, suppliers, and service providers,” shared Errol Lolin, SVP, general manager at Clune Construction Company. 

Set on 8.6 acres in the McClellan Business Park, Prime’s Sacramento campus totals 26MW across 215,000 sq ft (19,947 sqm). The original facility launched in 2020. Plans for a second facility were announced in 2021, with the company filing to develop the building last year.

Prime has 7GW of operational and planned capacity across the US and Europe, including Chicago, Phoenix, Austin, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, Frankfurt, Berlin (Germany), Helsinki (Finland), Esbjerg (Denmark), and Madrid (Spain).

Investors in the company include Macquarie Capital, Ares Management, Siemens Financial Services, Snowhawk, Nuveen, and Grain.
