Penta Infra has broken ground on a new data center in Germany.

The company this week announced it has begun construction of a new colocation data center in Hamburg.

The facility is due to go live in early 2025 and will offer 4.4MW across 2,500 sqm (26,900 sq ft) of white space.

The front facade of the data center will be covered with integrated solar panels and the building will be able to offer heat re-use.

Patrick van der Wilt, chief commercial officer at Penta Infra, said: “We are excited to announce that we are constructing a new data center in Hamburg, a significant and strategic European market. Hamburg is more than just a city of trade; to us, it symbolizes a balance between robust economic activity and environmental awareness.”

He continued: “Our decision to expand in Hamburg is also a testament to the considerable demand we've experienced from both existing and new customers. This new data center marks an exciting chapter in our ambition to expand our data center footprint throughout Europe.”

Founded in 2015, Amsterdam-based Penta is a private equity fund focused on European data centers with facilities in the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Denmark. Last year it raised €75 million ($83.5m) through a new financing deal, with interest payments tied to sustainability goals.

In Germany, it has facilities in Leipzig, Berlin (2), Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Hamburg currently totaling 21MW, and has more in development in Munich and Hamburg. Penta Infra acquired its existing Hamburg data center in May 2021.

It owns three data centers in the Netherlands in Geleen and Leeuwarden (2) – the last two taken over after buying DataCenter Fryslân in 2020 – totaling 2MW. The company operates a former Sentia data center in Copenhagen, acquired in 2021.

Earlier this year the company acquired Sungard’s French campus in Paris.
