European cloud firm OVH plans to expand into Latin America this year with new Local Zones in four countries.

Local zones are suitable for workloads with latency-sensitive services such as real-time analytics, e-commerce websites, Content Delivery Networks (CDN) for replay and streaming videos, as well as cloud gaming. Services include compute, block storage, and networking.

"We'll be in Brazil, in São Paulo; in Santiago de Chile; in Buenos Aires; and in Mexico. We'll have news for that market soon," said Adrián Gonzalez, business development director for Southern Europe and Brazil at OVHCloud, told DCD this week in a DCD>Talk.

The company's website lists planned locations in Mexico City, Santiago, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo. Further details weren't shared.

Initially, the new Local Zones will operate out of colocation facilities. After evaluating the response in these markets, the company could "increase investment in its own data centers" in the region, according to Gonzalez.

"There's a lot of potential for expansion in Latin America, and that's why we're committed to ensuring they can also use our cloud. And I'll also tell you why: because, ultimately, as part of the quest for the famous democratization of the cloud, it's also about bringing technology at an affordable price, obviously, to these territories, which also have their own demands and technological needs," he added.

Announced last year and powered by technology acquired from Gridscale, the company rolled out more than a dozen locations across 2024 and has continued to launch new locations this year. The company has Local Zones live in Madrid, Spain, and Lisbon, Portugal.

After launching in Europe and North Africa last year, the company also quickly expanded into the US. OVHcloud Local Zones are now live in 28 metros globally, and the company aims to reach more than 35 locations by the end of 2025 and 100 by 2027. Expansions into Latin America, Asia, and Oceania are planned.

As well as the Local Zones, OVH has more than 40 core data centers in operation and under construction in France, Canada, the US, Australia, Germany, Poland, Singapore, India, Italy, and the UK. These are a mix of self-built and leased locations.
