Middle Eastern data center developer Oman Data Park (ODP) has tapped Omani solar developer Solar Wadi to develop an on-site 1.4MW solar project to directly power its KOM 4 data center in Rusayl, Oman.

The partnership aims to establish Oman’s first "green energy data center," which will see additional solar capacity added over phases. Following the initial 1.4MW phase, Solar Wadi plans to add a further 400kW of capacity as part of an expansion.

“This initiative is more than an infrastructure upgrade; it is a statement of intent about the future of data management in Oman. Integrating large-scale solar power generation into mission-critical facilities marks a turning point in how we approach energy resilience in the digital economy,” said Maqbool Al Wahaibi, CEO of Oman Data Park.

The initial phase will include the deployment of solar panels on top of the KOM 4 building, with the energy generated supplied into existing electrical panels and switchgear. The second phase will see additional solar panels deployed in the data center's car park.

“By aligning renewable innovation with operational reliability, we are redefining the standards for sustainable cloud and data services, while advancing a technology landscape grounded in environmental responsibility,” said Al Wahaibi.

In addition, ODP reported that its planned data center in Firq, Oman, will be constructed with solar power integrated into its design. The solar array will supply the 4.4MW data center with an estimated 350kW of capacity.

Oman Data Park is a joint venture between Omani telco Omantel and data center company 4Trust LLC. The JV was founded in 2012, and currently operates three data centers, all in and around the capital of Muscat.

Last October, the firm entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Intro Technology to build a $450 million data center in Egypt within the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

Oman has a relatively small data center sector, with 15 reported facilities, according to Data Center Map.
