Nvidia is hiring for an orbital data center system architect, to help "build products for AI in orbit."
In a job listing, first spotted by Jack Kuhr, the company said that "this is an opportunity to join the leader in AI systems at the inception of a completely new industry."
The role will "drive architecture for orbital data center systems considering everything from the chip out to the satellite and connectivity between satellites," and work on building a roadmap for Nvidia products in space.
Applicants will need to understand the space environment, including reliability, radiation tolerant strategies, environmental tolerances, and thermal solutions. Ideally they will have experience solving mechanical challenges for rocket launches.
The base salary is $224,000-$356,500.
The job listing comes amid growing interest in space compute. Satellites already use semiconductors - rival AMD already has a space division focused on SoCs - but a number of companies aim to shift data centers into orbit.
Last November, Starcloud launched a single Nvidia H100 GPU into orbit and successful ran AI workloads. It plans an October launch with Amazon Web Services Outpost hardware.
Google plans to launch a number of TPUs into space, already having tested them with a particle accelerator to simulate low-earth orbit levels of radiation. The company has partnered with Planet for a small deployment, but envisions eventually sending gigawatts into space.
But the most aggressive in the space of space compute is SpaceX, with CEO Elon Musk seeking to deploy a million satellite orbital AI data center megaconstellation.
The idea has a number of critics, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, short seller Jim Chanos, AWS CEO Matt Garman, and analysts at Gartner.
