NTT is to build a new data center campus outside Paris, France.
The company this week announced its NTT GDC unit will be developing its first data center campus in France.
Located 50km south of Paris in the municipalities of Le Coudray-Montceaux and Corbeil-Essonnes, the 35.5-acre site will total 84MW across three buildings.
"Paris is a significant addition to our global offering and an important area in our expansion efforts," said Doug Adams, CEO and President, NTT Global Data Centers & Submarine Cable. "We are pleased to continue to add to our existing portfolio and market share in EMEA and enhance our client offerings to include Paris."
NTT operates European data center sites across the UK, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
While this is NTT GDC’s first French campus, NTT Communications has previously listed data centers in Paris. Paris 2 was located at 88 Champs-Élysées in the center of the capital.
"This investment complements our existing and growing presence in Frankfurt, London, and Amsterdam, and will complete our footprint in the FLAP Tier 1 markets in Europe," said Florian Winkler, CEO EMEA and global chief operating officer, NTT Global Data Centers. "We will develop our presence in the Paris metro area in close partnership with the local municipalities, partners, and the government. The addition of Paris builds upon our long-term proven track record of developing and operating in continental Europe and the UK and is a precursor for NTT's further expansion and growth in both, existing and additional new markets in Europe."
Logistics Capital Partners (LCP) acquired the former brownfield site around 2018/2019 through a public auction and subsequently managed the demolition, decontamination, and obtained the permits and necessary power connections for data center usage. The company will remain "strategically involved" to support the development and delivery of this new campus.
Founded in 2015, LCP is a Pan-European industrial site investor and developer. The company has developed more than 10 million sq ft of logistics and industrial assets in Europe in the last five years.
“We bought this as a contaminated brownfield in a public auction and turned it into a ready-to-go 125MW data center site that attracted the attention of the top operators in this fast-growing market,” LCP said on LinkedIn. “Very excited to now go into the next stage of the development of this landmark project together with NTT. Big thanks to our French team for pulling this off!”
According to LCP’s website, the ‘Data Village’ was previously a semiconductor site for more than 70 years – first operated by IBM and later Altis. Altis went bankrupt around 2016; the company was bought by Xfab, while the residual unused plot of land (with an abandoned standing building on it) was sold to LCP.
LCP said the company removed more than 750 tons of asbestos and 22,300 tons of polluted soil. Today, the company said the site has been divided into two 50MW units and one 25MW unit. The site, powered by RTE, is reportedly expandable to 210MW.
