Telia Towers has begun construction work on a satellite Earth station in Pyhäjärvi, Finland.

Swedish mobile carrier Telia's tower unit announced the planned build this week, noting that the company will build the satellite Earth station in cooperation with an unnamed US space company.

According to Telia Towers, the station will connect to satellites in Earth orbit and transmit their data to terrestrial data networks.

Modern ground stations have become a pivotal part of the global communications infrastructure in recent times. Telia notes that its station in Pyhäjärvi supports this development by providing an important northern connection point between satellites and terrestrial networks.

"The ground station project will bring modern space and telecommunications infrastructure to Pyhäjärvi as part of the rapidly growing space industry. The project parties commit to maintaining the site responsibly and working in good cooperation with the local community," said the company.

Telia's Pyhäjärvi ground station will house a few enclosed antennas and a technical equipment cabinet, while the construction project will be compact in size.

The company added that no tall masts, towers or other clearly distinguishable structures will be built in the area.

Telia didn't provide an expected completion date for the construction, though it did state that during the build, the area will be subject to normal earthworks, installation and commissioning work.

"After the construction phase, the ground station will operate mainly unmanned, with occasional maintenance and inspection visits to the area," added Telia.

Telia adds that the ground station won't impact the Internet, television, mobile phone or other communication services of residents in the surrounding area.
