Australian data center firm NextDC is to build a data center in Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory.
The firm said this week it had purchased land in Darwin and plans to build a Tier III facility known as D1 in the city’s Central Business District. Land price and planned facility specifications weren’t shared.
“We are honored to have been selected by the Northern Territory Government as its strategic partner to work together to continue to strengthen the Territory’s digital industry,” said NextDC CEO, Craig Scroggie. “This digital infrastructure development represents an important investment for the NT, that will further support and accelerate the growth of the northern digital gateway in Australia”.
NextDC said Vocus will provide high-capacity connectivity to D1 on its Terabit Territory fiber network, as well as being an anchor tenant in the facility. The data center will also support Vocus’ in-progress fiber infrastructure deployments in Australia’s north, including the Darwin-Jakarta-Singapore Cable system and the Project Horizon fiber between Darwin and Perth via Port Hedland.
“We’re excited to work with NextDC to build this world-class data center in Darwin,” said Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner. “We want to make the Territory a hub for digital industries and investment, and now we can look forward to building infrastructure that will create new jobs and opportunities, which will support local tradies.”
Darwin has recently seen an uptick in data center activity. Earlier this month DCI announced plans to build a 10MW facility in the city, while DXN acquired a bunker data center in the city called Secure Data Centre.
Fibre Expressway is reportedly planning to build a 20MW data center in Darwin as part of its new US$1.5 billion Project Koete connectivity plan for northwestern Australia.
In February NextDC-founder Bevan Slattery unveiled plans for HyperOne, a 20,000+ km (12,000 mile) AU$1.5 billion (US$1.1 billion) hyperscale national fiber network across the country.
