Microsoft is set to launch a new cloud region in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2027.

In a blog post by Omar Khan, VP of Azure infrastructure marketing, Microsoft announced the upcoming East US 3 region, as well as the expansion of five existing data center regions in the US.

While Microsoft already has a "Fairwater" site - a large-scale AI data center - which launched in November 2025, the company is building additional facilities to enable it to serve as a cloud region to support "all our customer workloads."

Plans for the cloud region were first revealed in 2021.

The company is known to be developing in Fulton County, outside of Atlanta, having broken ground in July 2024. Microsoft is also developing two other projects on the outskirts of Atlanta; in East Point, Fulton County; and Douglasville, Douglas County. All three projects will be part of East US 3.

The company also has a 347-acre property in Rome, Georgia, that was purchased in 2023 for a new data center campus. Rome is in northeast Georgia, close to the state border with Alabama, and around 70 miles from the state's existing data center hub in Atlanta.

In addition to the upcoming region, Microsoft has revealed it will be expanding several existing regions.

North Central US (Illinois) will have additional availability zones (AZs) by the end of 2026, West Central US (Wyoming) by early 2027, US Gov Arizona - which will have three AZs added - by early 2026.

East US 2 (Virginia) and the South Central US (Texas) regions, which already have three AZs in operation, will also expand with additional AZs in 2026.

According to Microsoft, the company has more than 70 regions operating and more than 400 data centers worldwide.

This week alone has seen Microsoft announce it will launch a region in Denmark next year, and commit to investing $17.5bn in data centers and AI infrastructure in India.
