Microsoft is developing a data center in Bornasco, Italy.

Bornasco is located around 25km (16 miles) south of Milan and 11km (7 miles) northeast of Pavia.

The data center is being developed at Via dei Pioppi & Via Rimembranze, 27010 Bornasco, with works already underway. "Urban development" work began in September 2025, including excavation, grading, and preparing the land for construction.

Construction officially began on January 12, 2026.

GSE Italia has been awarded the contract for the preliminary and site preparation works.

An application for the data center was first filed in June 2022, at the time seeking a preliminary site evaluation.

Based on project renderings, the site will have two data center buildings. Details about the size of the data centers have not been shared. The campus will also have 50MW of backup generators deployed on site.

Microsoft announced plans to invest €4.3 billion ($4.75bn) in expanding its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) data center infrastructure in Italy in October 2024. At the time, the company said it would expand its region in Northern Italy to become one of Microsoft's largest data center regions in Europe.

Microsoft's Italian cloud region is located in Milan. The company first announced plans for an Italian Azure region in Milan back in May 2020, with it launching in 2023.

Part of the cloud region is likely located at Stack’s Milan facility (previously SuperNAP Italita), with the company saying on LinkedIn at the time of the launch: “We are delighted to support Microsoft in launching their first cloud region in Italy.”

In May 2025, Microsoft revealed it was teaming up with Aruba to offer its "Azure Local" service from Aruba's data centers in Bergamo near Milan, Arezzo, and Rome.

Earlier this month, renewable developer Enfinity Global brought its first solar project online under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Microsoft in Italy. The 33.8MW solar installation is part of a wider collaboration between the two companies, with Enfinity expected to deliver up to 366MW of renewable capacity as part of the PPA.
